Legal and Governance Tour
28 October 2021, 11:00 CEST
Digital governance is the invisible thread that unites the digital ecosystem.
Today, discussions are intensifying around issues regarding the UN envoy on technology, the future of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), AI governance, cybersecurity, e-commerce, and digital standards, to name a few.
Many of these processes gravitate to International Geneva. The IGF, which brings together governments, businesses, and civil society, provides multidisciplinary coverage on digital governance. The World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) are some of the organisations that are leading discussions on the various aspects of digital governance, from technological infrastructure to e-commerce.
Geneva is also one of the leading commercial arbitration centres. WIPO, together with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), has developed the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) which is used worldwide to solve intellectual property rights disputes related to the registration of domain names. At the University of Geneva (UNIGE), legal innovators work on the online justice system Massive Online Micro-Justice (MOMJ) as an alternative mechanism for dispute resolution on the internet.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) helps legislators worldwide to introduce new legislation and policies on online privacy, cybersecurity, and e-commerce. In the field of intellectual property, WIPO deals with copyright-, patent-, and trademark-related issues, all of which have a significant impact on the digital world.
