Event description
Event date: 6 March 2024, 13:15–14:45 CET
The side event, organised by the Permanent Missions of Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Panama and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), focuses on addressing gender glitches in military artificial intelligence (AI) applications. These glitches refer to gender-specific oversights and biases that can occur during the development, deployment, and regulation of AI systems used in military contexts.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing discussion at the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS), concerns were raised about unintended biases in AI capabilities, including those related to gender, age, ethnicity, and disability. These biases can lead to adverse consequences such as mistargeting military objectives and unpredictability in system functioning.
The side event aims to gather experts and practitioners to discuss bias mitigation in AI systems and its connection with risk mitigation. The panelists will share ideas on how national and international actors can address inequalities and gender gaps in military AI, and provide recommendations on integrating these discussions into the GGE on LAWS.
